Ivan, a Denver Kids student, has been paired with is mentor John for three years next month. We did a Q&A with them to learn more about their relationship:

IVAN

Denver Kids: What is something that you were nervous about before/when you first met John, in terms of your relationship?
Ivan: When I first met John I was nervous at the fact that my counselor Curt had told me John was an older man. When Curt told me that, I was afraid that me being so young at the time, I would struggle with understanding and connecting with John. I later came to realize that it was John who was meant to build the connection with me, and he did, and since that day he has not only been my mentor, but he’s been my best friend.

Denver Kids: What was your first impression of John? How did you feel about being matched with him?
Ivan: My first impression of John was that he was a very different individual, he didn’t settle for anything other than an amazing time, he would go out of his way to make all the time we spent fun and amazing.

Denver Kids: What has John taught you during your time together?
Ivan: John taught me that with a little guidance I could accomplish anything, from educational goals to life goals.

Denver Kids: What are some differences that have presented themselves in your relationship with John?
Ivan: I would say some differences would be our music taste, he was always into rock and older style music and I would listen to that music with him, but then he would ask to hear my Spanish music or just general favorite artist, and although they were newer and not as interesting to him he tried hard to show me he had an interest in my music.

Denver Kids: What are some shared commonalities that you and John have?
Ivan: Me and John share our love for animals as well as our love for nature and outdoor areas, we have gone on many hikes and have spent a lot of time at his house with his dog.

Denver Kids: What do you both like to do for fun?
Ivan: John likes to play the drums and spend time at home with his wife and his dog. I love to play basketball and video games, as well as driving and spending time with my family and dogs also.

Denver Kids: What is something that the other person introduced you to that you now enjoy doing?
Ivan: John introduced me to travelling to different areas in Colorado such as Highlands Ranch, Greeley, Fraser, Aurora, and many more areas.

JOHN

Denver Kids: What is something that you were nervous about before and when you first met Ivan, in terms of your relationship?
John: Would Ivan and his parents be accepting of an older mentor who recently retired and may not be “in sync” with today’s generation of young adults?

Denver Kids: What was your first impression of Ivan? How did you feel about being matched with him?
John: I was in awe of his maturity beyond his age and ability to communicate so easily, so unpretentiously! I quickly recognized how special this young man was and how lucky I was to be matched with him!

Denver Kids: What has Ivan taught you during your time together?
John: Ivan has given me the gift of hope in our younger generation, and a sense of inspiration that the world will be a better place because of his remarkable selfless qualities.

Denver Kids: What are some differences that have presented themselves in your relationship with Ivan?
John: This is so funny, but I have to say that Ivan’s taste in music may be a little out of my league! He actually loves a range of music, however, my affinity to some of it is a bit limited.

Denver Kids: What are some shared commonalities that you and Ivan have?
John: We both love Mexican food, music, fishing, playing pool, basketball, and our special relationships with people.

Denver Kids: What do you both like to do for fun?
John: We both love to sample great pizza, attend Denver sporting events (Broncos, Rockies, and Nuggets games) laugh at each other, play pool, fishing, and talking about life.

Denver Kids: What is something that the other person introduced you to that you now enjoy doing?
John: Ivan introduced me to a great little restaurant that his family goes to every Sunday morning called, The Lookin’ Good Restaurant, where they have the best Huevos Rancheros breakfast in Colorado!
