When Claudia joined Denver Kids as a shy and timid fourth grader, her voice and confidence were tightly guarded. Claudia’s reluctance to engage with the world around her kept her from sharing her many gifts. The key to unlocking this special young woman? Enter Julie and Darla, Claudia’s volunteer mentor and Educational Counselor, who helped Claudia declare her dreams and overcome the obstacles to achieving them.
Denver Kids contributed to the greatness inside me and pushed me to engage with new experiences. I am now more self-reliant.
Now a poised senior in high school, Claudia, the daughter of a devoted single-mother, aspires to attend Loyola or Chapman Universities for a degree in advertising. She hopes to one day create movie trailers for the film industry. In the meantime, Julie and Darla continue to build bridges for their student, helping her overcome the obstacles to her dreams and providing for her the encouragement and support she needs to share herself with the world. In fact, through Denver Kids Claudia was invited outside her comfort zone to fundraise for a trip to Sea Camp in San Diego, an event Claudia counts as one of the highlights of her life. Since then, Claudia has become a Balarat Counselor and a Representative on East High School’s Student Council.Claudia maintains that because of Denver Kids, she now feels comfortable in her own skin. “Denver Kids contributed to the greatness inside me and pushed me to engage with new experiences. I am now more self-reliant.”
We honor Claudia for finding her voice—and letting us hear it! Together we are stronger, one graduate at a time.
