Graduating high school on time is an extraordinary achievement. Graduating in five years is sometimes even more. No one better exemplifies the grit of a “super senior” than Doncey. “From getting in legal trouble, suspended each month, failing every class, dealing with chronic depression, and being so frustrated about why I couldn’t seem to leave the circle of poverty, I have met many obstacles,” explained Doncey. With the ongoing support of his Educational Counselor, Doncey created a roadmap to visualize where he was and where he wanted to go. “Planning my future was pretty new to me at 15, and I had yet to realize how important it is,” said Doncey.
His Educational Counselor helped him achieve these goals by providing guidance on how to manage his time and prioritize after-school activities to ensure homework was complete and evenings were structured around a healthy night’s sleep. Today Doncey is a sophomore at Metro State University with a 3.63 GPA. He is majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in electrical engineering and intends to complete his studies at the Colorado School of Mines.
