What age group(s) do you serve?
Grade School, Middle School, High School
What do you enjoy most about working with the students you serve?
I enjoy building relationships with them, struggling through the obstacles with them and celebrating the successes with them.
I truly feel that serving our young people is a privilege and being a part of their lives is a gift. They teach me new things about myself all the time. They’ve taught me that you don’t have to be rich, or famous or politically powerful to have an impact in someone’s life because my students have made the greatest impact on me.
Describe a student outcome or success that you are most proud of.
One of the first students that I brought on to my caseload as a new counselor had to overcome some of the most tremendous obstacles, such as homelessness, living with a sibling with severe mental illness and having her house burned down. Our relationship went through ups and downs and moments of extreme tension, esp during her sophomore year of HS. By her Junior year she came around and became open to rebuilding trust and communication. She decided she wanted to graduate a year early so we teamed up and made that happen. She is now a freshman at CCD and still checks in with me to ask for recommendations, references and to catch up.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Keep showing up- especially when its uncomfortable.
