Educational Counseling

The Denver Kids, Inc. educational counseling program works with each student on school attendance and performance, positive peer relationships, family inter-relationships and dynamics, involvement in healthy, wholesome activities, anger management,  and conflict resolution.  Each child’s progress is evaluated on a regular basis, and if necessary, modifications are made, and other resources utilized (e.g., a family therapist).

The educational counselor works with students, parents, teachers, and school counselors to connect students to necessary resources and serve as their advocate. The educational counselor functions as both a link and a mediator with school staff so that the students can understand what is expected; learn to be responsible; and be supported in their efforts to achieve.

Progress evaluation is monitored during each school year and a long-term evaluation is completed upon graduation from high school.  Denver Kids, Inc. works with a high risk population and given their risk factors, graduation from high school is unlikely.  In May 2009, Denver Kids, Inc. had a graduation rate of 88%.  This is compared against the overall graduation rate for DPS which hovers around 50%.  Additionally, over 80% of our 2009 graduates are now enrolled in a two or four year college.
